Envelope printing · Free to start
Print addresses directly on envelopes.
Pick the people you are mailing, choose an envelope size, and download a PDF that prints names and addresses straight onto the envelope. No Word template, no mail merge, and the list is still there next year.
- No credit card. Free for one address book, up to 50 addresses
- 13 envelope sizes, from A2 note cards to No. 10 business, plus custom
- Free envelopes carry a small “Printed with Penmark” line in one corner. Pro ($1.99 a month or $15 a year) removes it.
How it works
From a list of names to a stack of addressed envelopes.
Four steps the first time. After that, the list, the design, and your printer's loading instructions are all saved, so a new mailing starts at step two.
Add or import addresses
Type them in, import a spreadsheet (Excel or CSV) or a contacts file, or paste a messy block of text. Photos, Word documents, and PDFs import on Pro.
Missing a few? Send a link and let people add their own address.
Select recipients and a size
Tick the people you are mailing this time. Choose the envelope you bought: A7 for 5 × 7 cards, No. 10 for letters, or any of 13 sizes and custom dimensions.
Position the addresses
Pick a style, then drag the recipient block wherever you like it. Put your return address in the upper-left corner or on the back flap. The preview is drawn with the same fonts and positions the PDF uses.
Download and print
One PDF, one envelope-sized page per recipient. The first time, print a quick setup page so Penmark can learn how your printer loads envelopes and save it.
Supported envelope sizes
Every page is exactly the size of the envelope.
Penmark makes a true envelope-sized PDF page rather than a letter-size sheet with an envelope drawn on it. Choose the right paper size in your print settings and the addresses land where the preview shows them. The five most common sizes, to scale:
| Size | Family | Dimensions | Typically used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| A2 | Announcement | 5.75 × 4.375 in | Folded note cards, RSVP cards |
| A6 | Announcement | 6.5 × 4.75 in | 4 × 6 photo cards, small invitations |
| A7 | Announcement | 7.25 × 5.25 in | 5 × 7 cards, holiday photo cards, invitations |
| A8 | Announcement | 8.125 × 5.5 in | Larger cards and programs |
| A9 | Announcement | 8.75 × 5.75 in | Oversized invitations |
| A10 | Announcement | 9.5 × 6 in | Large announcements and booklets |
| No. 10 | Commercial | 9.5 × 4.125 in | Business letters, statements |
| No. 9 | Commercial | 8.875 × 3.875 in | Reply envelopes that fit inside a No. 10 |
| 6¾ | Commercial | 6.5 × 3.625 in | Personal letters, smaller mailings |
| DL | ISO | 220 × 110 mm | International business letters (A4 folded in thirds) |
| C6 | ISO | 162 × 114 mm | A6 cards and A4 folded in quarters |
| C5 | ISO | 229 × 162 mm | A5 cards and A4 folded in half |
| C4 | ISO | 324 × 229 mm | Unfolded A4 documents |
| Custom | Any | 3 to 15 in per side | Monarch, square, and other envelopes not listed above |
Not sure which envelope you have? Measure it. The width is the long edge, and the dimensions above are the envelope itself, not the card inside it.
The part nobody warns you about
Your printer has opinions about envelopes.
The PDF is the easy half. Every printer feeds envelopes a little differently, and the first attempt on a new printer often comes out upside down or on the wrong side. That is normal, and it is fixable in one test print.
-
Printers load envelopes differently. Face up or face down, top edge to the left or the right, snug against one guide or centered. The envelope goes in sideways, and there is no universal answer.
-
Paper-size names do not match. A 6¾ envelope is called “Envelope Personal” in most print settings. Some printers list “Envelope A7”; many do not. Browsers, operating systems, and printer software each keep their own list.
-
Near matches are traps. Choosing “5 × 7” for an A7 envelope shifts and shrinks the print. When your size is missing, a custom paper size with the exact dimensions is the fix, and Penmark shows you the numbers to enter.
-
Some printers grip a little off-center. If everything prints in the right orientation but shifted, a small alignment adjustment saved with your printer moves every future envelope back into place.
What Penmark does about it: print a one-page setup sheet, tell Penmark how it came out, and it works out how the envelope needs to be loaded. The result is saved per printer and per size, and replayed as plain loading instructions every time you print. Penmark cannot detect your printer on its own, and it never rotates or flips the PDF; the fix is always in how the envelope goes into the tray.
- Perfect
- Upside down
- Printed on the wrong side
- Shifted or clipped
- Wrong size
Why not a Word template?
The template is the easy part. The list is the work.
Word can print an envelope. What it cannot do is remember who moved, collect the six addresses you never had, or print the same eighty people again next December without you rebuilding the merge.
A Word envelope template
- One envelope at a time, or a mail merge you set up from scratch each year
- The addresses live in whatever spreadsheet you can still find
- Missing addresses mean a round of “what's your address again?” texts
- Switching to labels means starting over in a different template
- Printer orientation is trial and error, every time
A Penmark address book
- Select any number of recipients and download one PDF, without retyping anyone
- The same list serves holiday cards, invitations, and thank-you notes, year after year
- Import what you already have from Excel, CSV, and contacts files
- Send one link and let people add or update their own address, then review before it lands in your book
- Print the same recipients on envelopes today and Avery-compatible labels tomorrow
- Your printer's loading instructions are saved and shown every time you print

Practical questions
Before you load the first envelope
Can I print envelopes with a regular home printer?
Most home inkjet and laser printers that accept envelopes can print Penmark's PDFs. Each page is made exactly the size of your envelope, so once that paper size is selected in your print settings the addresses print at true size. What varies from printer to printer is how the envelope has to be loaded and what the print settings call each size. Penmark's setup page and saved printer profiles sort out that part. A printer that cannot feed envelopes at all is a hardware limit; for those, Penmark also prints Avery-compatible label sheets.
Which envelope sizes does Penmark support?
Thirteen standard sizes: the announcement sizes A2, A6, A7, A8, A9, and A10; the commercial sizes No. 10, No. 9, and 6¾; and the ISO sizes DL, C6, C5, and C4. Anything else, Monarch included, can be entered as a custom size with sides between 3 and 15 inches.
Can I print a return address on the back flap?
Yes. The return address can go in the front upper-left corner or on the back flap. The flap version prints as a second pass: print the fronts, turn the stack over as Penmark's guidance describes, and print the flap pages. Keep any print-on-both-sides setting off; envelopes should not go through a duplexer.
Can I print several envelopes at once?
Yes. Select as many recipients as you like and Penmark produces one PDF with one envelope-sized page per recipient. Whole-list batches are part of the free plan, and you can print a subset or reprint a single envelope at any time.
Does the free version add Penmark branding?
Yes. Envelopes printed on the free plan carry a small line reading Printed with Penmark · usepenmark.com in 7-point muted gray in the bottom-left corner of the front, well away from the address. The flap pass never carries it. Penmark Pro removes the line, and if a Pro subscription lapses you keep printing; the line simply comes back.
Do I need Microsoft Word?
No. Penmark builds the envelope pages for you and hands you a PDF, so there is no template to download and no mail merge to set up. Anything that can open a PDF can print it, including your browser.
What if my printer does not list my envelope size?
Add a custom paper size using the exact dimensions Penmark shows for that envelope, for example 7.25 × 5.25 inches for A7. Do not pick a near match such as 5 × 7; it shifts and scales the print. If the print window has no custom-size option, choose Print using system dialog and look for Manage Custom Sizes under Paper Size. If your printer offers Envelope as a paper or media type, select it.
Does Penmark store the addresses I print?
Yes, that is what makes it useful next time: your addresses live in an address book in your account so you can print the same list again next season. You can edit or delete any address whenever you like, and nobody else sees your book unless you invite them to it.
Your envelopes are one PDF away.
Build the list, pick a style, print a setup page, and address the whole stack in one go.
